Apple’s highly anticipated “Awe Dropping” event later today is expected to mark a significant shift in its iPhone design strategy. The tech giant is likely to introduce the new iPhone 17 lineup, which could see a global move to eSIM-only models, a step first implemented in U.S. iPhone 14 models.

Since 2022, Apple has sold iPhones in the U.S. without a physical SIM card tray while retaining the traditional trays in other countries. Industry experts and analysts now indicate that this policy may be extended to multiple international markets with the iPhone 17 series, though some regions, such as China, may continue to offer physical SIM options.

An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a small chip integrated directly into a device, eliminating the need for a removable physical SIM card. It stores network credentials to facilitate calls, texts, and mobile data, functioning identically to traditional SIM cards.

The main advantage of eSIMs lies in their flexibility. Users can activate new mobile plans through QR codes or carrier applications without visiting stores or waiting for a physical card. The technology also allows multiple numbers on a single device and simplifies switching between carriers or plans.

Reports suggest that the ultra-thin design of the iPhone 17 Air makes the removal of the SIM tray practical, freeing internal space for other components. Analysts, including Ming-Chi Kuo, and news outlet The Information have indicated that international iPhone 17 Air models are likely to adopt eSIM-only configurations.

Supporting these developments, MacRumors notes that Apple is already preparing its European Authorized Resellers. Retail staff are reportedly completing eSIM-focused training courses just days before the event, indicating readiness for a global rollout.

Alongside the iPhone 17 lineup, Apple is expected to unveil new Apple Watch models and the next-generation AirPods Pro during the event.
